5 At-Home Activities

You don't need all the toys in the world, instead these are 5 at-home activities that you can do with your child that involve no extra items!

This fun activity will allow your child to build on the early mathematical skills and concepts (e.g. same/different, bigger/smaller)!

And all your socks will be paired 😉

Get your kids to sort the washing!

This could be by colour (the whites or the colours)!

You can also begin to explore positional concepts such as top, bottom, under, on, in, out and so on!

Deciding what’s for dinner isn’t fun for anyone, least of all mum.

As an activity that you can do with the kids, have them decide on the dinners!

They could draw pictures (and even begin to sound out and write the dinner item too!)

Amazing for developing their fine motor development, the ability to plan and organise, and an awareness of working with others to achieve a common goal. It also is a handy way to explore time concepts; today, tomorrow, night and days of the week.

Tupperware everywhere? Put them on the table and have your kids sort and organise the containers.

This will allow them to be able to visually distinguish and find the match (the older kids might be able to do this quickly after matching the first one if there’s multiples!)

The activity will build on their cognitive reasoning, persistence at a task that seems impossible, and early mathematical skills too!

Washing the toys is a great game to play at home, which extends on those self-help skills and really promotes independence.

This can be done with a small tub of soapy water and a wash cloth! You can build on language skills using descriptive language (e.g. clean/dirty), sequencing (e.g. first we ...) as well as comprehension (e.g. Why do we wash toys?  What do we need? What do we do next?)

It's also a great opportunity to start the conversation around the items that we already have, taking care of them, and potentially giving some away to those who might not have as much as us.

Will you try these simple at-home activities at home?
